Clubs such as Interact, Leo, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) have been hard at work, collaborating to raise about 500 pounds of food to donate to non-profit charity Metropolitan Ministries.
Princess Arrozal (’25) emphasizes the importance of bringing the community together to help families in need.
“The main purpose of the drive is to help families in need on Thanksgiving who had been affected by the hurricane. I don’t know how much we sent to be donated, but I do know we sent a lot of canned goods. This just represents the community coming together when others need it most.” Arrozal said.
SADD sponsor Nurse Janet Mendieta (FAC) elaborates on what donations were given, and how a lot of items were donated.
“We wanted to collect 200 items. [Metropolitan Ministries] didn’t have any preferences on what food they needed, it was more of any canned foods that were easy to open and any boxed foods like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and other non-perishables. We have a SADD Instagram where our officers would post a couple times a week, so we could get members to donate.” Mendieta said.
Sofia Fecarotta (’25) talks about the importance of contributing to the cause, emphasizing on how a lot of items were donated.
“Giving back to the community and getting groups of people together to collaborate gives back to a good cause. [We did this drive because of] Thanksgiving, since not everyone is fortunate enough to have Thanksgiving dinner and we wanted to help out with that. We have a bunch of members in our clubs, so we communicated to our members to donate for the drive which helped us raise a lot of goods.” Fecarotta said.
The collaborative efforts of these clubs demonstrate the power of unity and generosity to significantly help those in the community. Their aid helps bring families together during the holidays, showing the true spirit of Thanksgiving.
